Making a cyanide spill compensation claim on a No Win, No Fee basis.

A recent chemical spill in Walsall has been confirmed to have contained sodium cyanide, a highly toxic and potentially lethal substance if it is inhaled, ingested, or comes into contact with skin.

Sodium cyanide is a chemical compound frequently used in industrial processes, such as gold mining, chemical manufacturing and electroplating. This chemical compound is a soluble powder, that when dissolved in water, can release hydrogen cyanide gas – a deadly substance. Due to its extreme toxicity, strict safety protocols are necessary when handling this compound.

Exposure to even low levels of sodium cyanide can cause nausea, dizziness, confusion, headaches, loss of consciousness, and changes in heart rate. Small amounts of sodium cyanide can also be lethal, making it a significant concern when spills or exposures occur.

A metal finishing company has confirmed responsibility for the accidental release of this harmful substance into the Pleck canal in Walsall. As a result of the spillage, local authorities have advised the public to stay away from a 12-mile stretch of water, including the towpaths. This canal is interconnected to waterways in Birmingham, Wednesbury, Tipton and West Bromwich.

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is monitoring the situation and will issue further guidance if necessary.
